Copper is exhausted after her day at the groomers.

Copper is exhausted after her day at the groomers.

If you have a doodle, the loving comes easy!   Sometimes people are at a loss as to how to groom their doodle.  I would like to share a few things I have learned.

First of all, I do recommend you find a good groomer.  Find one that is willing to LISTEN to you about how you would like your dog groomed.  Because it is a new breed, sometimes groomers will go by what they THINK a labradoodle should be groomed like.  Find someone who really wants to do what you would like.  If they say they have experience with labradoodles, ask how they groomed them.

Mazy's new- Do!

Mazy's new- Do!

Idog.biz put out an excellent document that you can take with you to the groomers.  It has photo’s and choices for you to check a box on.  See it HERE.

Once you have a groomer, there are things that you should learn to do at home.  First of all, your dog’s ears need to be kept clean.  Floppy, hairy eared dogs can have little air circulation and yeast can grow in there ears.  This can cause ear infections.

Second, you may also want to know how to trim your doodles eyes.  You may not neet to go into the groomer for a full blown cut, but the hair around the eye’s might be getting long and can really be an annoyance to your dog.   Knowing how to trim the eye’s may be beneficial to a doodle owner.  Buy a good pair of short scissors for hair… It will save you many problems.

Third, knowing how to trim your dogs nails is helpful.  Again, it prolongs your time in between groomings.

We have put together 3 simple video Tutortials to help with these three grooming concerns.  You can get to them from our Loving and Grooming Page.

One thing to remember:  it’s ok to start doing these things now.  You may trim the hair crooked or cutting the nails might be scary, but this is how you learn.

Good luck!

  1. Hi Heidi,

We always trim and groom Floyd ourself. We brush him with the les poochs brush and we cut his hair with a scissor from http://www.doodlecountry.com. We have got a very good dvd from a breeder in Holland, Dog’s Paradise (www.dp-labradoodles.com). You can buy the dvd there. Another advice: Buy Gliss Kur from Schwarzkopf, will keep your doodle burdock-free a little longer :)
